AIHW: The Health Of Australia's Males Report 2011

2011Report The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare produced this report to coincide with Men's Health Week 2011 and it outlines the state of health of Australian men up to June 2011.

"Nearly half of Australian males have ever had a mental condition, one-quarter have a disability and one-third have another chronic health condition..."
This report draws on a wide variety of data sources to inform the community about the state of male health in Australia as at June 2011.
The report finds that as at June 2010:

  • There were 11.1 million males living in Australia accounting for about 49% of the population.
  • The median age is 36 years - 20% of males are under 15 years and 12% were aged over 65 years.

Some males make healthy lifestyle choices and have positive health outcomes:

  • Around two-thirds of males partipcipate in sports and physcial activity
  • Nearly 40% of males discuss health issues with a health professional
  • 20% of males rate their health as excellent

But many males are already experiencing poor health or are at risk of poor health:

  • Only 5% of males consume the recommended daily intake of fruit and vegetables
  • two-thirds of adult male and one-quarter of boys are overweight or obese
  • half of all males report being victims of violence.
  • 4% of males rate their health as poor
  • nearly half have ever had a mental condition, one-quarter have a disability and one-third have another chronic health condition.

The challenge for the health profession is to implement systems and policies that enhance the abiity of males to maintain good health.
