Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) is the peak national body for prostate cancer in Australia. The PCFA is dedicated to reducing the impact of prostate cancer on Australian men, their partners, families and the wider community.
The Ambassador Program trains people from the community to deliver presentations to communities, organisations, and businesses at no cost. The goals of the program are to raise awareness on prostate cancer in the local community while delivering timely and evidence-based information.
Three presentation choices are available:
- "Prevention and Early Detection"
- "Treatment Options and Challenges"
- "What Partners and Carers Need to Know"
Ambassadors are men and women with an interest in public speaking - many have first-hand experience of prostate cancer, are the partner or carer of someone who has, or simply wish to support the work of PCFA.
A training program is provided on how to give the presentation(s) and interested parties are encouraged to apply.
Organizations and businesses interested in hosting an Ambassador, and potential Ambassadors, are encouraged to contact the Foundation.
Implications For Service Providers
The Ambassador Program has reach all across Australia, and continues to expand across metropolitan, regional, to rural and remote areas.
The Program allows men and their families to interact with a member of their own community on this issue. Information is shared peer-to-peer, and presented in language that is easy to understand.
Ambassadors have presented at events across the country, ranging from mine sites, rural communities, to corporate events.
There is considerable evidence to show that delivering health messages to men works best when it is done by men or women that they can relate to and who have a personal experience with the issue being discussed.
