University of Adelaide: What Do We Know About Men’s Help-Seeking & Health Service Use?

Help Seeking This paper sheds some valuable insight into the patterns of behaviour of men and their families using services. The paper reveals that men approach health services with a distinctly different approach to that of women and that in some cases, services are not fully equipped to provide for the needs of men in comparison to women.

Research from Adelaide University identified some of the cultural and personal constructs that influence how man approach health services.

In general, there is often some reluctance to seek assistance which can result in delayed diagnostics and greater problems. The relative lack of knowledge inside health services about what males expect from them can present barriers to effectively managing male health needs. The authors advocate for increased collaboration and insight into how services and men can better engage to produce better health outcomes.
